I almost gave up playing guitar if Kurt Cobain had not released Nevermind. Then it was Jerry Cantrell and Kim Thayil, whom got be to backtrack to Tony Iommi, and recently to Jimmy Page.

I'd wanted to pick up a guitar since I was little. I can't remember the main reason but I do remember strumming a boy's guitar and thinking,"Wowww. I'd like to have a guitar one day.."
But it was watching Slash and David Gilmour play with such a passion that urged me on. Other main influences have got to be Chet Atkins, Joe Perry and Jimmy Page. Everyone else I listen to has influenced me in some way too.

Red hot chili peppers= otherside, californication, zephyr song, cant stop, under the bridge, soul to squeeze, by the way
Metallica- their slow songs like 'fade to black' and 'nothing else matters'
The stuff i write is very similar to my favorite type of music

I think i posted in this a while back but if you're an active music fan or player you always take on new inspirations and outgrow old ones so i'll update mine.
Tom Waits-A man who has never stopped striding to make random junk sound so good. Plus he plays a calliope and there's nothing cooler than than that. NOTHING.
Prince-Come on man, it's Prince, i don't care if he's crazy the man's a tiny musical god.
Howlin Wolf-This guy made me really want to play low down dirty guitar and that voice. Gives me chills
Michael Hedges- Dude reinvented the acoustic guitar. If you've never seen him play (which id likely since he's dead) look up a video of him doing Aerial Boundries or Ritual Dance. You might've seen guitar players like him, but he invented it.
The Black Keys- I've been a blues guy since i started playing guitar and i always really liked the white stripes but the Black Keys are 10 fold funkier. And when it comes to blues, funk is very important. Plus i didn't really think i'd be able to sing blues until i saw Dan do it and realized it's just what you put into it, you don't gotta be an old black man. I could listen to their entire catalog front to back more than once in a row.
Chris Cornell: I say just him because though i'm a fan of all the bands he's been in (and his solo stuff is ok) i list him because of his skill as a songwriter. He get's listed as a great singer but he is by far the most under rated songwriter of the past 25 years. He certainly had all of his contemporaries like Cobain beat as far as sheer songwriting goes that's for sure. If you doubt me go look at the lyrics to some of Soundgarden or Temple of the Dog's songs. That man can write.
Neutral Milk Hotel-This is a big hit among indie kids and i used to hate them for it but Jeff Mangum is a really great song writer and the guys he got to help him make In The Aeroplane Over the Sea were amazing. That whole album front to back is one of the best pieces of story telling in music. It's a little hard to get into at first because it's so out there but give it a few tries. Mangum reached way deep down to find something really touching in all that and i still sit there and wonder how he came up with half those lyrics or half the ideas to make that album.
Radiohead- Those guys don't know how to stop. Pablo Honey is an ok record if you listen to it as a stand alone but it doesn't even sound like Radiohead if you never started listening to them with Creep. The Bends starts a musical progression that just shows off how brilliant they really are with great concept albums, dense music and an ability to constantly innovate their sound and reach towards something bigger with every album. I'm going to see them at lollapalooza and i start to shake everytime i think about it. I wish i was half the instrumentalist Johnny Greenwood is.
I'm pretty sure i got more but somehow i have a feeling this post grew out of hand as i started getting into it.

im sort of embarrassed to say this, but when i started playing guitar, i mainly did it for the ladies. and i played really gay songs. but then i started listening to the good stuff, pink floyd, led zeppelin, bb king, and more. nirvana also got me interested since their songs are easy to play. and now, im a guitar fan, listening to pure good music of well, a lot of genres, but all of them have taught me something useful.

Don't worry about it, everybody's gotta start somewhere. Lot's of people have played music that sucked just to learn or to get chicks or to be in a band or lot's of other reasons, the point is you play and you play like you mean it(i'm assuming you do, if you tell me you don't i'm gonna disavow everything i've said and ignore everything you say from then on). Listening to and playing better music on is a bonus to your personality that makes your more likeable.

when I was younger my dad and my brother introduced me into much of the music I listen to today and encouraged me to sing and play instruments. Later my mom got me into poetry and writing.
Now my inspiration to write and play music comes from my daughter, my friends, nature and the music I listen to.
