So, I'm a sucker for applied theory. Figure I'd start a thread on it. Any favorite scales/modes for anyone?

Works for me. I love the blues scales as well, but there's something about being able to take the dorian mode and moving it into either blues, pentatonic or semi-chromatic that I really dig myself.

Sounds vaguely familiar but I can't recall.

Well, it's like the harmonic minor to a WHOLE new level. Harmonic Minor plays out like this numerically:
1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7 8/1
That generates a great tritone relationship between the 4 and the 7 and you get a lot of tension which can be resolved by either flatting the 7 or moving into melodic minor.
Hungarian minor adds another tritone to the mix and looks like this...
1 2 b3 #4 5 b6 7 8/1
Now you have that relationship between 1 & 4 as well as 4 & 7.
Also, the diminished scale works GREAT with the harmonic minor if you didn't know, it's just a progression of minor thirds, but it really helps add to the atmosphere.

I cannot get enough of the Phrygian mode. I may rely on it somewhat too much at times.

I quite enjoy phrygian as well. Pedaling off of the 6 down the scale has some really nice tones in there.

Has anyone taken AP Music Theory? I'm not sure if the Music Theory at our school is AP or not, but I think I'm going to take it. Knowing that I'll be graded on it may finally be the motivation to dive into theory.

No, all my theory study was done by myself and with my teacher (which is why my sight reading lacks...should probably work on that.) but I would totally recommend it. Theory is your best friend if you're a musician and, in my opinion, will totally take you to an all new level.
I've been learning the modes of the hungarian minor this week. Not sure what to learn next...I'm contemplating either enigmatic or neapolitan. Yeah, I'm doing my best to become some sort of walking scale encyclopedia. XD

I live inside a pentatonic though i play around with the Dorian mode whenever i feel its better suited and i use a choppy major scale a lot, i tend to be pretty conventional with my song writing which in itself means it sounds nice but its not exactly attention grabbing which is sort of a downfall.

Why not try to break out of that box? I think that even at the very least, if you don't use stuff in the other scales/modes but still play with them, when you go back to what you used to do you'll find that you've gotten a bit better. Once you start learning where the stranger tones are in a scale, you can write some really ear-catching stuff.

Learning theory is too similar to my math class, i'm reasonably good at math i just dont' care for it, when i play i prefer to sound it out then apply the theory(for the most part) since it allows me to feel like i'm exploring rather than doing mix and match. Plus the main reason i stick to the pentatonic is the same reason most peoples stick with anything, it was the first real scale i learned and i practiced it into my brain so much its what i naturally play in when im not really thinking. I like to play around i just am too lazy to sit and learn the new scales, i'll get to them eventually, when i feel like it. Right now i'm doing one thing but i'll get tired of it and learn something new.
