OK, in the vein of the favorite actors thread...how about directors?
For me:
1. Takashi Miike 2. Stanley Kubrick 3. Bernardo Bertolucci

1. Stanley Kubrick - glad to see another fan! 2. Tim Burton 3. Baz Lurhhman (sp?) Again, runner-ups are: Cameron Crowe, John Waters, Terry Gilliam, the Coen Brothers, and Sofia Coppola. I'm sure there's more, I'm just being lazy.

A John Waters fan? zomg, marry me.
Oh, allow me to change my third choice from Bertolucci to David Cronenberg.

Oh well. Bertolucci is still one of the best directors EVER.

1.Martin Scorsese (i like my films with a bit of grit) 2.Stanley Kubrick (i too am a fan though i feel that A Clockwork Orange is weak and overrated. We won't even talk about eyes wide shut.....) 3.Kevin Smith (i had to pick a cult icon and i hate Tim Burton so i pull my ace now.)

*high-five on Kevin Smith* That guys is the man. Clerks may be one of the best movies ever made.
And no, it's not bad that you're scared to get into Lynch. He's not that bad though. The absolute WORST moments of Mulholland Dr. can't touch the most normal moments of Videodrome. If you want seriously crazy, go with Cronenberg. Lynch is good, but not insane enough to be scared of.

Hmm... weak and overrated, but you still have an icon of it in your sig? how does that work out? lol... Oh, and Kevin Smith does rock, and I know that a lot of people hate Tim Burton, but I personally love him. I like Scorsese, but I think he's a little overrated himself. And thanks, ygg. I remember I rented Eraserhead but didn't get around to watching it. Maybe I'll get it again... and wow. Cronenberg sounds pretty fucked up.

Beyond that overall weak films can have good moments but that doesn't mean they can carry a film. There are nameless examples of poor movies with good moments, but they're still poor films.

Cronenberg is crazy...check out Videodrome, Existenz and Crash (not the new, mainstream movie by the same name.) However, Cronenberg is almost as family friendly as Spielburg compared to Takashi Miike.

There are nameless examples of poor movies with good moments, but they're still poor films. True, true, I guess. Btw, I like your Fear & Loathing and Sin City icons too. Both good movies. Oooh yeah, I've heard about Crash. My boyfriend saw it and said it was pretty insane... I should check it out.

Cronenberg usually is intense. And while people say History of Violence was great, I felt let down by it. *shakes fist*
