Well I'm not confident enough to start a band with guys, there ARE no bands that are in need of a bass player, and there are none of my friends play instruments (my friends are girls, I wish I had more guy friends).

Bassists are always in demand chuck. You may not know any bands that need one, but I'm sure if you do a bit of hunting, or advertising yourself as a bassist looking for a band then you'll get some responses. Where I live, and this seems to be a global thing, there is a shortage of bassists. I once put an ad one a few local websites advertising my services.... I was practically in undated with emails. Its nice being able to pick and choose who you want to play with. If your a guitarist life isnt as easy as that; everybody seems to play a guitar nowadays. I recently left my band. I was in a Guns N Roses tribute band (only 3 in the uk!). Had to leave because of my college work taking its toll on me. It was good fun though, but it can get boring after awhile playing other peoples songs day in day out. The thing about being in a tribute band as apposed to a covers or original band, is that you have to play each song note for note otherwise GnR fans get pissed of with you. No place for improvisation.

Anyway bassist are constantly wanted and you dont even really have to be any good. Ive been playing bass and guitar for awhile and trust me Im a much more accomplished guitarist then bassist, but.. I have yet been offered a position in a band as a guitarist and Ive had quite a few offers for bands. You dont have to be good when you just let people know you play bass. Plus being in the whole band scenario really helps you learn faster and also motivates you to play.
