;D I think one of the secrets of success in Led Zep songs are the ARRANGEMENTS. Nikka Costa's dad, world famous arranger (he arranged for Frank Sinatra, etc.) said that "the arrangements make the difference in a song". Opinions welcome. Rob

this might be a stupid que4stion, but what exactly are arrangements I think it's kinda like how the song is ordered, but like, not really. It's confusing.

hmm...ok, but are you talking about arranging their own music or arranging other music?

i think to arrange a pre-written piece is to keep the melody and theme of the music while making it cohesively playable for the instruments to play.
now arranging with regards to songwriting has to do with composing musical parts to line up in a song. for a composer to create a good piece of music, it takes a composed arrangement plus aspects of performance and musicianship for success to occur. arrangments differ from compositions, however in many aspects the arranger is sometimes rewritting compositions in their entirety.

yeah, im thinking what you mean is this: they make up their own music, but the way they put it together, like when bonham plays a paradiddle or when jpj walks on the bass, is the arrangemet, right? and they are geniuses at doing that

yes, any and all of the band's improvised notes count towards their credit. it is simply the basic structure of what they are all performing which can be defined as an arrangement. here and there songs are certainly going to be improvised through repetition and insight, inevitably all of us will hear a familiar arrangement which lets us detect the song 'being played' (or remains the same)

Thanx for the feedback here!! . The arranegments of any song makes the BIG diff in the end. Have you ever wondered what makes you dig one song rather than another even if the harmony, melody, ritheem, etc. is all there? It's the arrangements and arranging a good song is NOT easy at all Rob

Too true. And how sometimes when you try and make a similar song it just doesn't gel even though you know you've got something. That whole 'something is missing' thing is often the arrangement problem!

Too true. And how sometimes when you try and make a similar song it just doesn't gel even though you know you've got something. That whole 'something is missing' thing is often the arrangement problem! You got it . This brings me to what I call WIMPY songs....for me a WIMPY song is any song that "dies out on me", but in the past I just couldn't pinpoint WHY??! Then one day listening to an interview with Mr. Costa (Nikka Costa's daddy), one of the BEST arrangers the world has ever known (he arranged most of Frank Sinatra's tunes , I immediately found out!! . THAT is why I do NOT dig most of today's tunes including Madonna's and J-Lo's songs...it's not that I "hate" those singers, it's just that they've got ALL their arrangements wrong and that's because who writes and/or arranges them has only one thing in mind....the FINAL MELODY in order to hook the young audience out there. An easy-going melody DOES NOT mean good arrangements. Rob
