Lol I just read this for the first time, and even though this is now off topic, every time that has happened to me they have turned out to be jerks. Maybe just a coincidence? But not likely heh.

It really depends on the context they ask the question in, but for the most part, if they don't know you, that is a slimeball thing to ask. Most nice boys will realize that is a disrespectful thing to ask unless there is a good reason behind it.

Weird, because I'm not either, but pretty much anyone can be proud of their country when shown American society. sorry but you're wrong about that assumption. middle to late sixties san francisco (specifically the haight-ashbury district) was as utopian as any place the world has ever seen. no where has come close before or since. there are pictures of naked hippies associating with nuns on various street corners...

Yes, but then it defaults to the fact that was once San Francisco was the happy dwelling place of many native tribes and then you inhumed or imprisoned them all so you could have a 'utopia'

The Haight, hah that place has turned into a tourist attraction. I love that street, there's so many odd characters. I once saw this guy casually walking down the street in a full suit of armor, and of course all the burnt out homeless hippies sitting about.

the grateful dead lived at 710 haight st for a few years. those streets have lots of cool victorian architecture
the hippies weren't imprisoned there. the books say the place lost it's 'uptopian' resemblance after lots of 'non' hippy people found out about it and went there seeking retreat. in fact, its best years were something like 64-66. lots of musical acts came from there- jefferson airplane, grateful dead, quicksilver messenger service, janis joplin/big brother, and moby grape all were bands living in this little area of the city at one time. my cousin lives on page street and we were out chillin on his porch only to see robin williams a few houses over hangin out in the sunshine hell i think full house was set close to the haight

What do you mean hippies weren't imprisoned there? I was talking about native americans, don't skip over their torment

it use to be commonplace hearing the word 'tribe' substituted for family or communal groups. the 'utopia developed out of kindness and respect for all cultures, any native americans probably were welcomed with open arms. in fact a lot of the san francisco hippy culture seems to have borrowed elements from eastern mysticism and native american natural philosophy. credo, we should take this one over to the phish thread

Lol. The point still remains there would be no San Francisco but for the driving out of the native tribes, no matter what hippies tried to do later on, no utopia can be founded on evil

so if my car hits a bird, can that stretch of road evermore be considered a great place to drive?

Right, compare the death of millions of people and the destruction of a culture to hitting a bird on the road

right sidestep the point of the question to go for the sympathy vote. my guess is you dont know if there even was a native culture around san francisco. that foreign typecast of america is why i brought up one of its gems. you must not know about haight ashbury or it's countercultural significance if you quickly keep going back to wars and violence.

I'm not dismissing it but everyone always dismisses the native tribes as if it was just some long ago thing that no longer matters, but they still suffer for no reason and people don't even notice. And there weren't tribes as such around San Francisco, though I use the word, still there were indigenous villages and dialectal differences within the area of California, and what happened to them do you think? Hmm.
If I didn't recognise and respect the efforts since by people to make peace for mankind I wouldn't be on here, but I find it hard to believe in any American society considering it's routes and it's continual interference in others affairs, I'd state Nicaragua and Bolivia as particular examples of Americas interference outside North America itself. I'm no more proud of the British don't get me wrong. But a utopia based on countries they stole for the sake of greed?
