I'm into the indie/alternative type stuff of today and I won't bore you by listing them all, but I liked the 90s a lot, in fact many of my favorite bands are from that decade. I think most of them were mentioned already, but: Nirvana Smashing Pumpkins Third Eye Blind Goo Goo Dolls Dream Theater (formed in 80s) I'm sure there's more...I'm so bad about coming up with this stuff on the spot.

i'm a massively huge janis joplin and airplane fan, but i have found that i rather enjoy widespread panic, OLD O.A.R. (when they had jam-band status, which, actually, i they are regaining. i went to a concert a few months back because it was free and they were sick.) and, as much as i hate to admit... dave matthews band. i've been staving off a fanship for them for a while, but i'm warming up to them. aside from that, i listen to some chili peppers and some 90s rock, but my heart is forever stuck in the '60s...

Does it really matter what religion you are anyway? Switchfoot is a Christian band. And they ROCK too.

right....if one more person calls the chili's a 90's band, i might very well snap regardless of not actually forming in the 90s the chilis had a lot of hits(if not most of them) in the 90s and so one could technically call it their peak years as far as popularity goes though they seem to bring up back up periodically. The same could be said for a number of bands.

Zombie, you totally need a hug for mentioning the Pillows. Anyways, figured I'd throw in a couple of groups not mentioned here.
Mew - very odd sounding band from Denmark. Kind of ambient, kind of jazzy, kind of creepy. They're finally starting to get a little exposure in America, but not much.
Poets of the Fall - Band from Finland and may possibly be the best new rock band on the planet. These guys can play DAMN well, write excellent lyrics and really know how to put their stuff together.
Guitar Wolf - Loud Japanese band. By loud, I mean they'll totally blow your speakers if you crank them all the way up. I can't stress how loud they are. Killer old-school style punk.
Ayreon - All I can say is that when it comes to progressive music, Arjen Lucassen can out do anybody in the scene.
Kishidan - quirky Japanese rock band that may have the greatest music videos ever made. EVER. EVER.
The Back Horn - Another Japanese group (I like my Japanese music, can you tell?) that has a really intense feel about them. Their music, no matter how fast, is always played (and sung) with more emotion per song than most bands can muster per album.
Tito and Tarantula - New Mexico based (I think) group that plays in both Spanish and English. A lot of their music can be heard in Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn. Very stylish, often funny and always good.
If anyone wants some samples from these bands, I'll be glad to post 'em up.

Here's their album "Hungry Sally and Other Killer Tales. Lemme know what you think. www.megaupload.com/?d=CDALQL2ZOh, another awesome group/project is Blackmore's Night. It's done by Ritchie Blackmore (Rainbow and Deep Purple) and his wife (I think it's his wife.) But it's all renaissance music with slightly haunting vocals. One more that I thought of is Elfonia. They're a progressive jazz/rock fusion band based out of Mexico. The lyrics are usually in spanish and mix jazz, rock, a little metal and dark, almost gothic sounding vocals. Marcella Bovio may be one of the best female vocalists I've ever heard.
